Mjelde and Kirby both score as Chelsea women dramatically beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 despite Sophie Ingle’s red card as the Blues grabbed first leg win in the UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16 at home.

Chelsea Women were comfortably controlling the game until an attack from the away side saw Sophie Ingle committing a foul which got her sent off in the 13th minute as a penalty was awarded to the Spanish team.

Atletico Madrid had the lead on sight for them to grab but Castellanos stepped up and couldn’t make it count as she missed the penalty which would have seen her side taken the advantage.


The first half of the encounter ended with a 0-0 goalless scoreline which was impressive for the Blues who already are playing with a one man disadvantage throughout the game.

The second half of the encounter looked bright for the home side who seemed to be in total control as they were the better side who bossed and made things happened in the early stages.

Atletico Madrid luck ran out when they conceded a penalty and Maren Mjelde stepped up and converted neatly in the 58th minute which made it 1-0 for her side as the game progressed.

Chelsea increased their lead to 2-0 in the 64th minute as Fran Kirby scored an outstanding goal which came after a massive wave of attacks that the Spanish team couldn’t contain and it lead to a goal.

The game progressed with the away side getting another penalty which Dongen stepped up to take and yet again they couldn’t make it count as she missed the opportunity to give her side something in the encounter.

The match ended with a 2-0 win as the Blues takes a first leg advantage which will be useful and very important ahead of the second leg encounter which takes place a few weeks time.
