Chelsea was surprised by Southampton, a fifth defeat in six for Frank Lampard.
On the south coast, Mikel Arteta starts his job at Arsenal with a draw at Bournemouth whereas Carlo Ancelotti won his initial game to blame of Everton, over Burnley.
Later within the day, Manchester United thumped Newcastle 4-1 once going a goal down.
